One driver from Woodthorpe posted on Facebook: “Chaos coming into York off A64 near Askham bar park and ride. Hope everyone is safe.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said at 6.45pm: “There are very long delays in the area of the A64 south of York.

“We’re working as fast as we can to ensure everyone is safe – but in the meantime, please follow local traffic alerts, and be patient.

“If you can, we recommend you find alternative routes for your journeys this evening.”

They later issued this update: “All road clsoures have now been lifted – thank you for your patience.”
