The man has since been charged with several offences, including fraud, handling stolen goods and cycle theft. He was remanded into custody before he is due to appear in court.

A North Yorkshire Police issued the following advice:

“Please ensure that cars and outbuildings are properly locked and secured, and nothing of high value is kept inside.

“A common issue is keyless cars being entered due to the vehicle inadvertently being unlocked due to proximity of keys to the vehicle, please keep the keys in a safe place away from the vehicle.

“Remember, keep your car locked and remove all valuable property from your car, including any bags and coats.

“Pull your car handle to check it’s locked. If it’s a keyless entry car, make sure your car keys are not left within range for someone to copy the signal.”
